Mission Rabies is working with the Government of Malawi, to eliminate rabies in Malawi.
The problem:
- Rabies is a significant public health concern in Malawi and is endemic with disease present throughout the country.
- 99% of all human rabies deaths are caused by an infected dog bite.
- It is estimated that at least one child will die from rabies every single day in Malawi. Many more are at risk of rabies following a dog bite, but not all have access to receive lifesaving rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) vaccination.
Our approach:
- Canine rabies vaccination is the WHO approved strategy and most cost-efficient method of preventing human deaths from rabies.
- Most dogs in Malawi have an owner, therefore, educating people is vital for successful rabies prevention.
- Education on rabies, dog bite prevention, and post bite first aid wound treatment gives communities the tools they need to protect themselves from this deadly virus.
- Since 2015 Mission Rabies has been working with the Department of Animal Health and Livestock Development (DAHLD), initially in Blantyre City but now across many districts, providing mass dog vaccination campaigns, rabies education, and rabies surveillance. The aim is to vaccinate over 70% of the canine population, build herd immunity in dogs and cut the cycle of transmission.
- Each year we aim to expand to more districts to increase our geographic coverage across Malawi.
